The New Crosstown: Part Two

When the new stretch of I-40 eastbound opened up last month, many Thunder fans had to get used to a new route in and out of Chesapeake Energy Arena.

Well, get ready for part two – the new westbound lanes of the I-40 Crosstown will open Sunday morning, which means the old I-40 westbound will be closed.

Starting with Sunday night’s game vs. the Denver Nuggets, fans who use I-40 westbound through downtown will need to be advised of alternate routes.

To help clear up your questions on getting to and from the arena for Thunder games, here’s the latest info.

EXITS/ON-RAMPS

Starting Sunday morning, the new exits headed westbound on I-40 from I-235 will be:

Robinson Ave.

Western Ave.

Pennsylvania Ave.

Villa Ave.

The exits headed eastbound on I-40 from I-44 will remain:

Agnew Ave.

Pennsylvania Ave.

Western Ave.

Shields Blvd. (which turns into E.K. Gaylord Blvd. heading north)

Again, starting Sunday morning, the only on-ramps headed westbound on the new I-40 will be:

Shields Blvd. (which E.K. Gaylord turns into heading south)

Western Ave.

NOTE: The on-ramp at Robinson Ave. will close permanently as of Sunday morning. Fans who usually get on to I-40 westbound at Robinson are advised to use the Shields Blvd. on-ramp; Western is an alternate option.

And the only on-ramps headed eastbound will remain:

Pennsylvania Ave.

Western Ave.

Shields Blvd.

For detailed information about the changeover, go to http://www.okladot.state.ok.us/.

NEW NOTES

Going to the Chesapeake Energy Arena, the best exits to take are Robinson Ave. (headed westbound) and Shields Blvd. (headed eastbound).

Coming from the Chesapeake Energy Arena, the best on-ramp headed either eastbound OR westbound on I-40 is at Shields Blvd.

Fans coming from the north (via I-235) or from the south (via I-35) will still be unaffected by the opening of the new stretch of I-40. However, with ongoing downtown construction related to Project 180 and construction of the Devon Tower, all fans are advised to review the latest information at http://www.okc.gov/project180/P180WeeklyMap.pdf.

Reno Ave. from E.K. Gaylord Blvd. to Robinson Ave. is closed both before and after Thunder games to accommodate pedestrian traffic.

BEST ROUTES IN

From the north (via I-235):

Exit I-235 S at N. 6th St./Downtown (Exit 1F)

Turn right on Harrison Ave.

Take slight right to N.W. 4th St.

Take first left onto Broadway Ave.

Follow from Broadway to E.K. Gaylord Blvd.

Arena is just west of Gaylord on Reno Ave. Follow normal routes to parking.

NOTE: Alternate option is to merge on to westbound I-40 and exit at Robinson Ave.

From the south (via I-35):

Continue from I-35 N to I-235 N

Turn left onto Lincoln Blvd.

Take first right onto Reno Ave.

Arena is just west of Gaylord on Reno Ave. Follow normal routes to parking.

Head north on Robinson Ave. (Some areas are currently narrowed to one lane.)

Arena is just east of Robinson on Reno Ave. Follow normal routes to parking.

NOTE: Robinson Ave. will remain closed between Main St. and Park Ave.; Sheridan Ave. will remain closed west of Robinson Ave. to Hudson Ave. There is no left turn from Robinson northbound on to Reno; fans can use SW 2nd St. to access areas west.

OKLAHOMA CITY –Worried about your teen driver texting behind the wheel? Well,
now there’s an app for that. More specifically, a new device that communicates
with your car’s computer and takes away the texting tool when the car is in
motion.

Jackie Cooper
Electronics has partnered with the manufacturer of this device and is getting
ready to sell the invention at their stores.

Considering that two years ago, electronic device distractions led to nine
fatalities and nearly 550 injury crashes in Oklahoma, this invention could bring
parents peace of mind.

You can tell your teenager not to text and drive, but we know how that turns
out.

“Yes, I tell them ‘don’t do that,’” said concerned parent Andrea Jones. “But
you know when we’re not around, they do what they want to do.”

So because there’s often a lack of self-control, a new device called
Cellcontrol is expected to take off.

“We’ve been looking for a device like this for over a year,” Jackie Cooper
Electronics President Donnie Chaffin said. “We’ve had a lot of requests for
it.”

Cellcontrol
shuts off a cell
phone‘s ability to send or receive text messages or emails when the car is
moving.

“Parents are concerned,” Chaffin said. “I think the general public is
concerned. We’ve all seen cars weaving back and forth and you think maybe it’s
someone that’s drinking, but no it’s someone that’s texting.”

Unlike GPS devices, it connects to a car’s on-board computer to detect when
the wheels are turning and communicates with a phone’s Cellcontrol app.

We put it to the test and the text screen disappeared when we put the
car in drive.

When we stopped, the texting screen reappeared.

On the Cellcontrol website, parents can also decide what phone
numbers their teen can call, see how fast they were driving and know if their
teen tried to uninstall the app or remove the device.

“They’re going to try everything they can do to get around it,” Jackie Cooper
Electronics Operations Manager Doug Berner said. “But this device has a lot of
safeties built into it, so they’ve kind of thought of all those things.”

The cost is almost $6.95 a month after a $59 installation.
It works in
vehicles manufactured since 1996.

Chaffin says Jackie Cooper Electronics will have
carry Cellcontrol in about 10 days.
It works with Androids, Blackberries,
most Windows Mobile phones and will soon be available for the iPhone.

But the Devon building is not finished growing.

The impressive skyscraper is closing in on a planned height of 850 feet and 50 stories, but also impressive is the “bucket hoist” that takes workers and executives straight up the side of the building. It goes up to the 37th floor, where the Oklahoma wind whips by at furious speeds.

Devon Executive Chairman Larry Nichols says the building’s shape will help shed the wind.

“This will give, but it doesn’t have that whiplash effect.”

For construction crews working constantly on the Devon Tower, whistles warn of moving loads and crews are all business. More than 1,000 workers are on site each day.

“The morning shift starts early in the morning, about 1,200 people work here all day,” said Nichols. “Then during the evening and midnight hours, it goes down to a staff of 65 or 75, something like that.”

It’s essentially a 24-7 operation; massive in every way, including the $750 million price tag. Devon employees are reminded every day of the place that will soon be home, and Nichols says that will be sooner than expected, as the project is ahead of schedule.

“The construction itself has gone fairly quickly. We’re building one floor a week.”

Nichols says the different trades doing the build-out are keeping pace through efficiencies.

“This plumbing unit is constructed off site, and so when the plumber gets ready to install it, the whole thing has already been built and tested.”

Our tour took us to seventh floor, the test floor, where sub-contractors can work out any kinks.

We finish in the six-story, glass rotunda. It’s Nichols’ pride and joy because it ties the entire headquarters together. And, being open to the public, it will further tie together Devon and the city it’s called home since Nichols and his father founded it 40 years ago.

“When we hired the architects, we looked very carefully,” said Nichols. “We wanted a building that would be a source of pride for our employees, for our company and for the city.”

Nichols says he expects employees to start moving into the building by next February, with the entire move complete by July. About 1,800 people will work in the building.
